Hertfordshire Chorus’s inaugural Kings Place concert features works making use of spaces and multi-layered textures: Tallis’s Spem in Alium, Vaughan Williams’ Mass in G Minor and the world première of Orlando Gough’s Ice, a work commissioned by Hertfordshire Chorus and Kings Place Music Foundation.
Spem in Alium: Tallis
Spem in Alium is one of the most elaborate and spectacular pieces of choral music ever written. Scored for 40 voices (eight choirs of five voices each), the piece will be sung in the round in order to maximise this extraordinary sonic experience.
Mass in G Minor: Vaughan Williams
This beautiful lyrical mass for unaccompanied SATB Soli and double chorus is a wonderful example of the dignified majesty of Vaughan Williams’ compositions. Written in 1921, it was dedicated to Gustav Holst and written for his Whitsuntide Singers. The first performance was given by the City of Birmingham Choir on December 6, 1922.
Ice: Orlando Gough
World première of a Hertfordshire Chorus / Kings Place Music Foundation commission
Orlando Gough’s Ice commemorates the first trip to the North Pole in 1909.
